    Job Summary:
    Under the direction of the Supervisor of Building & Grounds the Lead Grounds Worker is responsible for leading and coordinating the daily maintenance activities on District grounds during the assigned shift. Duties and responsibilities include monitoring and ensuring that established standards of groundskeeping are maintained; operates and runs grounds equipment and systems; coordinates, leads and monitors work of grounds workers for productivity and safety.

    SECTION II:  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

     
    • Leads, trains and monitors the work of grounds workers. Monitors work of subordinates to ensure that work meets standards.

       
      1. Monitors and ensures the maintenance and cleaning of assigned areas by grounds personnel.

      2. Makes additional assignments, adjustments or work orders based upon work needs.

      3. Identifies grounds problems, needs or issues and communicates with the Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds concerning grounds facility needs or problems.

      4. Informs supervisor of performance problems, training needs, or other staffing/personnel issues.

     
    • Plans, schedules and implements ground maintenance activities and programs.  

     

    a) Conducts fertilizing and weed control throughout the school district  

     

    b) Plans and schedules the maintenance of lawns, shrubs, and trees including mowing, and trimming. 

     

    c) Installs and maintains playground equipment. 

     

    d) Coordinates and performs planting and landscaping projects. 

     

    e) Inspects district grounds to determine needs, priorities and projects. 

     

    f) Monitors staff activities to ensure work is performed appropriately.  

     
    • Plans, schedules and participates in the maintenance of practice and sports fields.    

     

    a) Maintains bleachers, fences, sprinkler systems, and general field maintenance 

     

    b) Instructs staff and assists with preparation of athletic fields by measuring, painting, marking lines, dragging fields. 

     

    c) Performs turf maintenance. 

     

    d) Maintains sport stadiums. 

     

    e) Collaborates and works closely with coaches, teachers and administrators concerning the grounds activities/projects.  

     
    • Assists the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds with planning and overseeing snow removal, salting and sanding of all district driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. Determines when to call out removal crews and size of crews.  

    • Researches products, equipment and procedures to increase efficiency, reduce costs and improve district services.  Assists with developing specifications and bid requests from vendors, obtains quotes and assists in the selection of vendors for new equipment or construction/grounds projects in the district.  Coordinates the maintenance, servicing and repair of grounds vehicles, equipment and tools.  

    • Recruits, selects and hires seasonal staff to assists in grounds activities.  

    • Monitors and controls the approved budget and expenditures for ground supplies, purchasing and labor costs. 

    • Advises and works with the Supervisor of Building & Maintenance and Superintendent concerning maintenance problems, needs and concerns.    

    • Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.

    • Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices. 

    • Knowledge of athletic field layouts and maintenance. 

    • Knowledge of chemicals used in fertilizing and weed control. 

    • Fundamentals of general carpentry, masonry, landscaping functions associated with grounds maintenance and projects.

    Required Work Experience in Addition to Formal Education/Training:
    Minimum of 1 years grounds, custodial or maintenance experience.
     
    LICENSE/
    CERTIFICATION
     
    Identify licenses/certification required: 

     

    Non-Commercial Applicator’s License. 

     

    Valid State of Minnesota Commercial Class B Driver’s License.

    • Operating equipment used in lawn care including lawn mowers, fertilizing and weed control, and all other equipment and vehicles necessary in performance of the job. 

    • Operating all vehicles used in performance of the job including trucks, tractors and snow removal vehicles. 

    • Reading, understanding, following and enforcing safety procedures. 

    • Performing general carpentry, masonry, and mechanical work.
