FREE "Being Mortal" Film & Community Discussion Event

The Hastings Honoring Choices Advisory Council, a committed group of community partners and individuals, cordially invites you and your loved ones, to join us for a very special "Being Mortal" Film Screening & Community Discussion Event. The goal of this event is to bring community members and medical professionals together to start the conversation about end of life care, no matter the age of the adult. This 50-minute film will illustrate the importance of thinking and planning ahead as we reflect on what matters most to us. We will educate attendees on the importance of having these conversations with loved ones, along with their doctors and other trusted professionals.

Dr. Bill Spinelli & Mary O'Brien have been trusted resources in our community and will be our discussion facilitators for the evening. They'll be leading a group discussion after the film is viewed. This discussion is aimed to ease fears and concerns associated with having these conversations. Come and join us! Attendees will be encouraged, educated, equipped and inspired to continue these conversations after the event. Many resource partners will be in attendance to help answer questions and provide opportunities to engage or learn more about the next steps in developing your end-of-life wishes.

This is a FREE event for all adults. Reserve your ticket today. Space is limited and this event will sell out.

Doors Open at 5:45 pm
Film & Discussion Begin at 6:30 pm

About the Film...
Being Mortal is a FRONTLINE public television documentary that explores the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness and their relationships with the doctors who care for them. The documentary tells the story of physician Atul Gawande who is learning to think about death and dying in the context of being a healer. By sharing stories from the perspective of both physicians and the people and families he encounters, including his own, the documentary sheds new light on how our system – so often focused on a cure – neglects the important conversations that need to happen so that a person’s true priorities can be known and honored at the end.
The stories in Being Mortal show us the value of shared decision-making in medicine at the end of life and illustrate the importance of thinking and planning ahead as we reflect on what matters to us most. The stories further reveal the human side of physicians, whose own vulnerabilities, fears, and lack of training may impede timely and open discussions with patients.

About the Venue....
Dr. Travis & Sarah Lockwood are owners and proprietors of the Hastings Art Center. They have graciously donated the use of their beautiful performance space for this special evening. Dr. Lockwood, along with Sarah, understand the gravity of these conversations and the importance of them due to his work as a physician in the Hastings community. We are so grateful for their generosity in hosting this event for us.
